Job Summary
The Litigation Expert manages litigation casework and leads key tax appeals and litigation cases, representing the Customer’s position and ensuring sound legal reasoning and procedural compliance. The role handles judicial proceedings involving escalated tax disputes, prepares or oversees the preparation of evidence files and legal briefs, and ensures adherence to procedural and statutory timelines. It coordinates with relevant departments to secure supporting documents and provides legal analysis to guide case strategy, ensuring consistency, transparency, and fairness in dispute resolution. In coordination with the Legal Affairs department, the Litigation Expert supports and liaises with external counsel in the preparation and presentation of cases before courts, ensuring that the Customer’s legal position is accurately and effectively represented.
Key Responsibilities
Case Preparation & Legal Analysis
- Manages and oversees litigation cases referred to courts after appeal decisions issued by the Tax Disputes department.
- Analyzes case merits, applicable tax laws, and procedural grounds to develop robust legal arguments and defense strategies that reflect the Customer’s official position.
- Prepares or assists counsel in preparing pleadings, position papers, and supporting documentation in accordance with judicial requirements.
- Ensures accurate application of relevant tax legislation and precedents when drafting legal submissions.
Evidence Management & Coordination
- Leads and coordinates the gathering, review, and validation of evidence and records necessary for judicial proceedings, in collaboration with relevant departments and staff.
- Coordinates with the Tax Policy, Tax Audit, and Taxpayer Compliance departments to obtain technical inputs and documentation that reinforce the Customer’s legal position.
- Ensures all case files, exhibits, and correspondences are maintained in accordance with recordkeeping, confidentiality, and data protection standards.
- Monitors evidence sufficiency and works with involved departments to address gaps before hearings.
Litigation Proceedings & Representation Support
- Supports the Head of Appeals & Litigation section in managing complex court submissions, procedural requirements, and timelines.
- Liaises with the Legal Affairs department and external counsel to ensure consistent and unified representation of the Customer’s legal stance.
- Tracks case progress across all stages (filing, hearings, judgments, enforcement) and maintains accurate status logs.
- Reviews judicial decisions, extracts key rulings, and recommends next steps, including compliance, procedural, or legislative adjustments as required.
- Contributes to the preparation of Decision Impact Statements or equivalent internal reports summarizing the implications of major rulings for the Customer’s operations, policies, or future case strategies.
Advisory & Knowledge Sharing
- Provides expert opinions on ongoing litigation matters and their potential policy or enforcement implications to safeguard the Customer’s position and procedural compliance.
- Contributes to lessons-learned exercises to identify recurring legal issues and systemic causes of disputes.
- Supports the Tax Disputes department in developing templates, manuals, and training materials on litigation procedures.
- Summarizes judgments and rulings to update internal reference databases and inform future case handling.
- Assists the Risk and Compliance functions, when required, by highlighting litigation-related trends or exposures that may warrant preventive actions.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Prepares periodic litigation status reports covering caseload, outcomes, and success ratios.
- Identifies trends in judicial decisions affecting the Customer’s interpretation or practice of tax laws.
- Recommends procedural and policy improvements to strengthen case preparation and compliance.
- Contributes to departmental performance indicators (case turnaround time, compliance with deadlines, quality of submissions).
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
| Preferred qualifications | ● Bachelor’s degree in Law, Taxation, or related field. ● Master’s degree in Law (LL.M), Taxation, or Public Administration is preferred. ● Admission to practice law or equivalent professional qualification is an advantage. |
| Preferred experience | ● 16+ years’ experience in tax litigation, dispute resolution, or legal advisory within public or private sectors. ● Proven experience managing or supporting complex cases in administrative or appellate courts. ● Familiarity with judicial procedures and evidence standards applicable to tax-related disputes. |
| Technical & Other Skills | ● Strong knowledge of tax law, judicial processes, and dispute resolution mechanisms. ● Ability to analyse judgments, develop legal reasoning, and draft concise case summaries. ● Skilled in managing case documentation, legal filings, and cross-departmental coordination. ● Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical precision, and attention to detail. ● Strong organizational and time management skills to meet statutory and procedural deadlines. |
