Job Summary

The Indirect Tax Objections Specialist reviews taxpayer objections on indirect tax assessment decisions and other related decisions. The role assesses admissibility, analyzes legal and factual grounds, requests and evaluates additional evidence, drafts well-structured recommendations and decisions within statutory timelines, and prepares complete case files for potential escalation. It supports consistent, fair, and timely resolution of objections within the Objections section, including formulating recommendations on whether objections should be allowed, partially allowed, or rejected based on the analysis conducted.

Key Responsibilities

Objection Intake & Admissibility

  • Receives, registers, and allocates objection cases within the section; verifies eligibility, completeness, and filing within prescribed time limits.
  • Confirms decision details under objection, taxpayer identity/representation, and required documentation.
  • Trakcs procedural milestones and service-level timelines to ensure compliance with established objection procedures.

Case Review & Evidence Assessment

  • Analyzes objection statements, grounds, and supporting evidence against applicable indirect tax legislation and procedures.
  • Requests additional information or documentation when required and monitors taxpayer responses within prescribed timeframes.
  • Assesses assessments, penalties, and refund determinations using objective legal and technical analysis to formulate balanced recommendations on whether objections should be allowed, partially allowed, or rejected.

Decision Drafting & Issuance Support

  • Develops draft decisions and recommendations addressing each ground with clear legal references and factual analysis.
  • Supports issuance of decisions within 60 days of receipt; records implied rejection where no decision is issued within the prescribed period.
  • Provides notifications to taxpayers or authorized representatives using channels that ensure proof of receipt.
  • Submits draft decisions for review and approval by a designated authority, and incorporates feedback or additional analysis requested to finalize the case outcome prior to submission to the Objections Committee where applicable.

Escalation & Case File Preparation

  • Prepares indexed case files, evidence logs, and summaries for matters escalated beyond objections for review by the Objections Committee or subsequent appeals stages.
  • Coordinates clarifications and documentation required for subsequent stages and ensures continuity of the record.

Coordination & Records Management

  • Coordinates with relevant internal counterparts to obtain confirmations or data needed to conclude objections.
  • Maintains accurate, confidential records in line with data protection and retention requirements.
  • Ensures complete audit trails for requests, submissions, deliberations, and decisions.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Provides periodic summaries and statistics on volumes, turnaround time, outcomes, and common error themes.
  • Contributes updates to templates, checklists, and guidance to improve consistency and quality.
  • Highlights recurring issues and recommends procedural or guidance enhancements to strengthen compliance and documentation standards.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Preferred qualifications● Bachelor’s degree in Law, Taxation, Accounting, or related field.
● Advanced degree in Law (LL.M), Taxation, or Public Administration preferred.
● Professional certification (e.g., CTA, ACCA, CPA) is an advantage.
Preferred experience● 9+ years’ experience in tax disputes, administrative review, or legal/tax advisory with emphasis on indirect taxes.
● Experience managing an objections caseload, applying legislative provisions, and working to statutory timelines.
● Background preparing well-reasoned drafts and case files suitable for escalation.
Technical & Other Skills● Strong knowledge of indirect tax legislation, objection procedures, and administrative law principles.
● Proficiency in evidence assessment, case documentation, and case-management systems.
● Clear written analysis and structured decision drafting; attention to accuracy and completeness.
● Coordination, planning, and time-management skills to meet decision deadlines.
● Experience interfacing with audit, disputes, and digital/IT on implementable solutions and efficient data access.
