Job Summary
The VAT Expert supports the establishment and implementation of the Customer’s Value Added Tax (VAT) function. The role provides technical and operational expertise, working under the direction of the VAT Head to help ensure smooth rollout and ongoing effectiveness of the VAT system.
Key Responsibilities
VAT Policy Support
- Supports translating VAT policy into clear operational procedures and guidelines.
- Oversees the drafting VAT manuals, rulings, and taxpayer guidance documents.
- Monitors international VAT developments and provides documented input for policy updates.
- Provides internal technical input and coordinates with Taxpayer Guidance and Service Centers to ensure consistent VAT interpretation and communication across the Customer.
Implementation & Operations
- Supports the definition and documentation of VAT processes (registration, filing, payments, refunds, appeals) in coordination with operational owners, ensuring consistency, clarity, and alignment with strategic and policy frameworks.
- Coordinates with IT & Digital teams to ensure VAT system readiness and data accuracy.
- Provides direct support on system testing and business rules validation.
- Supports VAT go-live and subsequent system upgrades.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Supports establishing VAT compliance controls and risk frameworks.
- Assists development of taxpayer compliance practices, identifying gaps and supporting corrective measures.
- Supports coordination and preparatory alignment with VAT audit and enforcement teams, providing analytical inputs, process insights, and contextual information to ensure consistency with strategic objectives and planned initiatives.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Collects and analyzes VAT data to assess compliance levels and operational effectiveness.
- Prepares reports on VAT KPIs, risks, and issues for review by the VAT Head.
- Contributes to mid-year and annual reviews of VAT outcomes.
Capacity Building & Taxpayer Support
- Contributes to and supports training initiatives in collaboration with relevant departments, providing technical VAT expertise and ensuring consistency of content on VAT processes and compliance requirements.
- Provides technical VAT support, escalating complex cases to the VAT Head.
- Supports communication campaigns to raise VAT awareness among taxpayers.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
| Preferred qualifications | ● Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Economics, Finance, or a related field. ● Master’s degree in Taxation, Economics, or Public Administration preferred. ● Professional certification in Taxation or VAT (e.g., CTA, ACCA, CPA, GCC VAT Diploma) is an advantage. |
| Preferred experience | ● 16+ years’ experience in VAT or other indirect taxes. ● Hands-on experience with VAT compliance, operations, or taxpayer services. ● Strong understanding of GCC VAT frameworks and international VAT/GST models. ● Demonstrated support for tax reform initiatives and operational rollout. |
| Technical & Other Skills | ● Solid knowledge of VAT processes and compliance controls.Strong analytical and reporting skills with ability to interpret VAT data. ● Proficiency in drafting operational procedures and taxpayer guidance. ● Effective communication and training skills, with ability to explain VAT concepts clearly. |
